Data Out of SharePoint

Web Services - SharePoint provides a rich set of web services which is often the best method of getting SharePoint data into other systems

i.e. CMS that consumes SharePoint data. SharePoint might be a good system for managing data and the external CMS is better at presenting it (e.g. EPI Server)

Data Into SharePoint

Connectors - There are mature SharePoint connectors that allow SharePoint are many well know system to integrate e.g. TRIM, Objective
Business Data Catalogue (BDC) - the SharePoint way of connecting, using and viewing line-of-business system data to SharePoint

Search - Enterprise search is a very good way to expose line-of-business systems to SharePoint and loosely connect them. Protocol handlers let SharePoint access and understand the data of 3rd party systems.

Page Viewer Web Part - a very easy way to "host" external web based systems into SharePoint. The page viewer web part allows a web page to be viewed inside SharePoint.

Data View Web Part - an under estimated web part that can be used to view external data in SharePoint. This could be web services, XML, SQL server and other ODBC databases
Reporting Services - freely available with SQL Server. SharePoint and reporting services are tightly integrated (SharePoint can host reporting services reports) and can provide a very easy way to present external data in SharePoint
