Hawke's Bay .NET User Group

The Hawke's Bay .NET user group was started in December 2005 to get together IT professionals from Hawke's Bay that are interested in .NET based software development. The aim of the group is to share ideas and experiences with this platform with the rest of the group. As a group we are also in a position to talk to Microsoft NZ to draw on their resources and speakers.

The group consists of a mixture of software developers, IT managers, IT lecturers from EIT (Eastern Institute of Technology) and EIT students. Everybody is welcome to come along. Being part of the group, or just joining for a particular presentation, does not cost you anything but your time.
We have regular meetings, roughly every 6 - 8 weeks, normally on a Thursday late afternoon. As a part of our get together we will have a presentation. Either by one of our members, or by somebody from outside.

If you are not a member of our group yet, but are interested in becoming one, keep an eye on this website and register for our next event.

Hawke's Bay: Silverlight - What's New 4.0
This presentation will be centred around the latest version of Silverlight - I'll demo/discuss/show as much as we have time for, there's no shortage of cool stuff to cover.
Depending on a show of hands on the day, I may also take time to introduce Silverlight to those new to it and discuss where I see it fitting into the web application landscape - this alone could take up a whole session but even for Silverlight converts it's important to understand where it fits, why it isn't simply another Flash, why traditional HTML/CS/JS based web applications are still important, why standards are important but not a pre-requisite for web technology, where WPF and Silverlight are heading...
So come along - looking forward to seeing some new faces.

VSTS 2010 – What are the roles and where is it going?
VSTS 2010 is the ‘third release’ of Visual Studio Team system – common folklore tells us that means it is the most complete and stable release to date. In terms of stability time will tell but early indications are favourable – in terms of completeness new features for the test and architect roles are a big advance in VSTS 2008. Most smaller development shops don’t have specific architects or testers but the new role tools are still important because let’s face it – the roles still need to get done usually by the ‘developer’. So come along and learn what new stuff is available for several roles and how you can leverage it.
Mark Carroll is a founder of aBEAT which is a consultancy specialising in IT architecture and software development support. He is also the user group lead for the Wellington based Visual Studio Team System user group and was with Microsoft for a number of years before he formed aBEAT.
